The question of working hours before the industrial revolution is
somwhat controversial, for fairly obvious reasons.
Most of the
evidence indicates that
workers in pre-industrial societies had--and have--far
more leisure
time than workers in industrial societies.
The scientific
evidence consists largely of records of paid workers, as well as
information on the number of religious holidays enjoyed
during pre-industrial times in Europe. A considerable
amount of evidence on the issue has been assembled by Schor.
See, for example,
J. B. Schor, The Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline of
Leisure (New York: Basic Books, 1991).

International Community's Office of Public Information and used

organizations, and people everywhere.
