It's possible Abdu'Baha was refering to the custom of parents making
the choice of partners for marriage. A custom still in practice in many
countries where it is not unheard of to match the marriage of two very
young couples and when they reach a certain age the marriage takes
place. Only after the couple makes their choice and ask their parents
for permission to marry can the parents express their approval or
disproval of the marriage.
