Companionate Marriage

Postby Irish » Fri Dec 29, 2006 6:03 am

"It condemns the prostitution of art and of literature, the practices of nudism and of companionate marriage, infidelity in marital relationships, and all manner of promiscuity, of easy familiarity, and of sexual vices."
-Shoghi Effendi, ADJ, pg.30

What is companionate marriage and why is it condemned?

"Companionate marriage" in politically correct terms is "cohabitation." "Cohabit" in the dictionary is defined as "live together and have a sexual relationship without being married." It is condemned because fornication is forbidden, but more generally because living together like that is not chaste, and as the Guardian tells us, the Baha'i standard is very high.

Hi...A very delayed reply...See http://bahai9.com/wiki/Companionate_marriage for some quotes. Seems the phrase can be used with different connotations.

Best wishes,
Brett
