proofs of second coming in the bible

Postby British_Bahai » Fri Dec 07, 2007 8:44 am

My friend has emailed me and asked me to post these questions on this messageboard:

Here's my quesiton:
"Only just a freshy to studying prophecies from the bible on the
faith, and am hoping someone can shed light on a couple of questions i
have, as they're really stumping me.

First question: Sears bases some of his investigation on Miller's
theories that predict the year 1844. A common arguement i've
seen/heard is that Christ in the bible repeatedly states that the hour
of the second coming is only known by God (obviously paraphrasing).
The theory i devised on this is that the book was sealed until 1844,
which makes this statement true, then after 1844 the book was
unsealed, and understood. But then if this is true, how was miller
able to devise his 1844 theories before 1844? (only 20 odd years
before this time)

Second question: In the bible it states "and the holy city shall they
tread under foot for forty and two months". Miller works 40 and 2
months out to be 1844 after doing the calculating and converting of
years from different calendars, BUT, the way i'm reading that quote is
that the gentiles will hold onto the holy city for forty and two
months. Meaning 1844 years after they banish the Jewish people from
their land, which would then give a different year.

Any ideas?

Hello British Baha'i,

For the first question, Miller didn't calculate the "hour" of the coming. :)

For the 2nd question, "1844" is not ITSELF the equivalent of "42 months", though we believe 42 months leads to 1844. I haven't researched how or even whether Miller came up with 1844 from 42 months (I'll take the questioner's word for it that he did use that prophecy), but according to Baha'i teachings, the calculation leads to 1844 due to the number of years of the Dispensation of God (i.e., of the Islamic Dispensation) in which Jerusalem had lost its glory, though the "Holy of Holies" had been preserved (as also according to the prophecy). (See Chapter 11 of Some Answered Questions at ). The Bab appeared in year 1260 of that calendar (i.e., 42 months = 42 * 30 = 1260). This is from the Book of Revelation. Another place in the same book also refers directly to 1260. 1260 was also anticipated by Muslims, as it was year 1000 after the last of the Imams disappeared in 260 A.H.

The Book of Daniel also mentions a time, times, and a half. With a time representing a year of 12 months of 30 days, the total of 3.5 which this represents multiplied by 12 months and by 30 days, the total is 1260. There is also a reference to 1290 days in Daniel, and this is the date of Baha'u'llah's public proclamation (1290 lunar years from the date of the proclamation of the mission of Muhammad--while the 1260 figure is reckoned from the Hejira, 10 lunar years later).

There is yet another Biblical calculation which leads to 1844, and this calculation starts with the rebuilding of the Temple. Per estimates based on the Book of Ezra, see and a number of sources at , 457 B.C.E. is viewed as (one of) the dates where the Temple was ordered to be rebuilt. ('Abdu'l-Baha discusses this in Some Answered Questions (which also happens to be one of the books which we as Baha'is are supposed to "master"! (see ... g.html#106)), in Chapter 10 at .)

The Book of Daniel refers to 2300 "days" (as above, each considered a year, per Numbers 14:34) Which leads from 457 to 1844 (no year zero).

warmest regards,
