Sept. 11 Memorial Observances

Daley Plaza, Dearborn and Washington: Actor Gary Sinise leads the city's official service, which includes the reading of an interfaith prayer at 11:45 a.m. The city will also observe three minutes of silence at noon and the ringing of bells at houses of worship. Call (312) 744-3315.

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, 5850 S. Woodlawn: The University of Chicago's carillon bells will ring starting at 7:48 a.m. At 8 a.m., a short prayer service will be held in the chapel. . Olive Park, off Grand, east of Lake Shore Drive: The Burnham Park Yacht Club will offer a procession of patriotic-decorated boats, starting at 4:30 p.m. and heading north to Navy Pier, then back south to Burnham Harbor. Tinley Park: Odyssey Country Club, 19110 S. Ridgeland Ave.: At 7 p.m. Wednesday, 3,202 electric candles will be cast afloat on a pond at the country club. On shore, 3,202 flags, each carrying the name of a 9/11 victim, will be waved. Army Lt. Col. David Manville, who survived the Pentagon attack, will speak. A piper will blow a dirge, and seven doves--to represent the three hijacked flights that struck buildings, the two World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Penn., where United Flight 93 crashed after passengers fought the terrorists on board--will be set free.

Wheaton, DuPage County Complex, 421 N. County Farm: The dedication of the DuPage County Police and Firefighters Memorial sculpture will be at 2 p.m. Call (630) 682-7413. Wilmette, Gillson Park, 850 Michigan Ave. on the lakefront just north of the Ba'hai Temple: People are invited to bring a flower to a one-hour gathering, starting at 7:45 a.m., to be included in a temporary memorial.
