Dr Kelly's wife kept diary of final days

The widow of Dr David Kelly is reported to have kept a diary of the last days before his death.

Janice Kelly was reported to have told Geoff Hoon, the Secretary of State for Defence, about the existence of the document when he visited her last week. Mr Hoon, it was claimed in a Sunday newspaper, was not shown the diary. Instead, she intended to send it to Sir Kevin Tebbit, the Permanent Secretary at the MoD.

Dr Kelly spoke to fellow members of his church over his concerns about the way the intelligence used by the Government in its Iraq weapons dossiers had been "interpreted".

Geeta and Roger Kingdon, who follow the same Bahai faith as Dr Kelly, said the scientist gave a talk to fellow worshippers in which he said he was uncomfortable with the way the intelligence material was presented. But Mr Kingdon stressed that it remained unclear whether Dr Kelly blamed the Government or the media for the misinterpretation.

After Dr Kelly came forward to tell the MoD that he had met Andrew Gilligan, the BBC defence correspondent, he was interviewed at a "safe house" in Hockley, Essex, according to the unconfirmed reports. He was also told he and his wife should "get away" for a few days to a property in Jersey owned by the Foreign Office, but he turned down the offer.

Although Downing Street attempted to portray Dr Kelly as having acted inappropriately in talking to Mr Gilligan, it has emerged that he had taken part in at least a dozen officially sanctioned interviews with the media.
