EDITOR'S FOREWORD

In this collection of letters from the beloved Guardian to the German and Austrian Bah‡'’ communities between 1922 and 1957, we have included all extant letters and telegrams to the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bah‡'’s of Germany and Austria, as well as to their institutions such as summer schools, national conventions and national conferences.
Through the loss, however, of all documents during the period in which the Bah‡'’ Faith was prohibited in Germany (1937-1945), certain connecting links, vital to an understanding of the development of the Faith in Germany and Austria and the relation of the believers to their spiritual world centre, are missing. To bridge this gap, we decided to include other letters which are of significance for the whole Bah‡'’ community, for example letters to the oldest communities in Germany and Austria or letters to individual members ot [sic] the National Spiritual Assembly during those years.
The recipients of the letters are listed chronologically in the appendix to this volume, except for those cases where they are named in the letters themselves.
A second volume is planned and will follow soon after the present one. It will contain extracts from the large number of extant letters to Bah‡'’ communities, groups and individual believers, and will also cover the whole period between 1922 and 1957.
Many of the Guardian's messages from earlier days, the originals of which have been lost, are to be found in German translation in the journal ÈSonne der WahrheitÇ. At the appropriate time, they will be printed in the German version

of Shoghi Effendi's letters to the German and Austrian Bah‡'’ communities. We are deeply indebted to the Universal House of Justice for the guidance it has given during the compilation of this collection, and for sending us copies of the early messages of the Guardian.
