| abstract note | The death of Sayyid Kāẓim Rashtī, the second Shaykhī leader in 1259/1843 was thebeginning of a number of crisis over the leadership of the Shaykhī community. All of the brands of Shaykhīsm which appeared after him shared the messianic fervor of their Shaykhī heritage, and one of them, Bābīsm, significantly added to it. Wilāya is a key concept in the writings of the Bāb, though he never uses the term walī for himself. As it will be observed in the following, in his conceptualizations of the office of wilāya, the Bāb remains faithful to the confine of Shī'īsm, in which, imām is walī and ḥujja of God on the earth, and the Bābī Cause is but the continuation of the legitimacy and charisma of the Hidden Imām. Wilāya, however, finds a new angle in the Bahā'ī writings, in the sense that, it is not only institutionalized in the office of Wilāyat-i Amrillāh (the Guardianship of the Cause of God), but also comes to be secularized. |
