abstract note"It does not abolish polygyny though it imposes restrictions in the form of seeking permission from district officials before taking another woman. Whether and how such restrictions can be implemented in practice to ensure that men actually do seek approval before taking on other wives is questionable. The proposed law does not outlaw multiple marriages under the Hindu, Bahai, and Islamic, customary or state laws. It maintains the sectarianism hitherto in existence by recognizing all types of marriages."
