| abstract note | The Baha'i World Centre Library in Haifa, Israel, is mandated to be "the central depository of all literature published on the [Baha'i] Faith...". Since its formalized inception in 1977 it has assiduously pursued the comprehensive acquisition of all forms of print and media publications produced by the Baha'i community, and selected materials by commercial or other publishers that mention the Faith. Where possible, this included items "born digitally". However, the provision of access to the early collection of electronic publications was hindered by the character-based computer system used at the Baha'i World Centre. Finally, at the end of 1999 the Baha'i World Centre moved into a graphics computer environment based on Microsoft products allowing the Library to experiment with methods of fulfilling its mandate with regards to collecting electronic or digital materials. These are items received by email, saved from the Internet, or copied from disk or CD-ROMs deposited with the Library. The Library attempts to work as much as possible with the tools provided as part of the Microsoft suite to lessen problems of incompatibility for its users who are all within the organization and are all provided with the same software. Internet Explorer is used to save Web pages individually while entire Web sites are saved using the free software "Web Stripper". As a last resort, some pages are saved as screen shots. Microsoft FrontPage is being used to create Intranet access to the collection. This latter software is designed primarily for the small, amateur Web manager and appears to have difficulty managing a large Web. Thus, multiple archival Webs are being created on a chronological basis with a single index Web linking them all together. While strict archiving of the original with no changes would logically seem the goal, in reality, some changes have to be made to many of the documents archived to ensure that the "experience" is emulated correctly. Potential problems of access caused by future changes of software and technology are not being addressed at this time. |
