title Introducing and welcoming a newcomer to small groups (including families) : who are you and what are you doing here?
author Lynch, Karen Tucker
item typeThesis
publication year2016

abstract noteThis thesis explored the socialization of a newcomer into existing small groups such as work groups, social groups, and families. This work turned to various fields of study relating to group developmental stages, family life cycles, and preparation of marriage--as described in Puritan, Islam, and Baha'i traditions. In an interdisciplinary approach, this work described a new model of progressive stages experienced during such period. This work fills in gaps that have occurred between the academic work of group development and family socialization, while including the experience and traditions of marriage preparation. This integration resulted in the description of stages and recurring realms. Included are descriptions of two stages--introducing and welcoming--and a recurring set of issues and behaviors that may be referred to as a spiritual realm.
