Abstract Translation:
BABIS, Muslim sectarians who have just appeared in Persia. We read in a letter from Tabriz, dated 1 March 1849:
“We have been talking for some time about a religious sect which has taken up arms in Mazandaran to defend the teachings of its leader, who is currently in prison here. The Babis, as they are called after their leader, profess very advanced socialist ideas; they are as mad as one can imagine, and they have already gone to excess against the authorities. Now that the government seems completely free from the embarrassments of Khurasan, it will probably be able to reduce them.” We do not have, so far, other details on the Babis.
