| Abstract | In the March 1873 issue of The Galaxy, p. 435, the editor of the journal, William Conant Church, refers to the "rapid rise of Mormonism and Babism in this country," i.e. in the United States. Church corresponded with Unitarian minister James T. Bixby in the 1870's per the list of Church correspondence found here: https://archives.nypl.org/mss/548#c1103736. Bixby would write about the Bábís years later (1897, 1912), but may have informed Church of the spread of the Bábí Faith in such a general way in the 1870's that Church mistook it to mean Babism was spreading in America at the time. This is an early reference to the Faith. |
