This sympathetic account appears in his 1890 essay, Clouds on the Horizon, "On the various forms of Error, which stand in the way of the acceptance of real Christian Faith by the educated Natives of Asia, Africa, America and Oceania," Ch. II - "The old Systems Purified, Refined and Adapted to the Environment of a Civilized Society." He draws from Browne's 1889 JRAS articles, from an article by Robert Bruce in The Church Missionary Intelligencer, June 1890, from Kazem Beg's 1866 articles, and from the Encyclopaedia Britannica 9th ed.
