This passage appears in chapter IX entitled 'Agnosticism', an essay that appeared in the journal, Nineteenth Century, Feb. 1889. We know that Huxley updated the article for publication in this book because Browne's 'Traveller's Narrative : Episode of the Bab' was first published in 1891.
