abstract Liebling was an American journalist closely associated with The New Yorker from 1935 until his death in 1963. He was among the most widely admired journalists of his generation. Regarding right-wing columnist, Westbrook Pegler, he writes: '...he proceeded to a discussion of a manifestation called babism, which he defined as a 'Persian delusion launched early in the century by a swami named Abdul Baha, also known as The Bab.' Concerning this delusion, Pegler wrote, 'I do, however, venture fearless rejection of babism as a hellish doctrine...' It is hard to intimidate Peg.'
