| Notes | Bahá'í Faith: [inside front cover]. Copyright by Associated Publishers. This play is set in January of 1802 on the day of the invasion of the island of San Domingo (now Haiti) by France. Pierre Toussaint l'Ouverture (1743 -1803) was a black rebel leader and statesman who successfully lead San Domingo to independence under a constitutional government. In 1802, however, his forces were defeated by Napolean's, and he was banished to France where he died a prisoner (see World Order Apr. 1942, "Black Hero" by Ellsworth Blackwell). The author's biography, printed on the inside of the front cover, states the following: "Known as a playwright and author, she is a member of the Baha'i Faith and for recreation prefers golf." On verso to title page is written: "Permission for the performance of this play must be obtained from the author, Helen Webb Harris, 3900 16th St., N. W. Washington, D.C. 20011." She also wrote a play about Frederick Douglass (first published in 1952 in Negro History Bulletin - Feb, March & April 1952). |
