Abstract U.S. consul Robert W. Imbrie was murdered by an anti-Bahá'í mob in Tehran on July 18, 1924, based on hysterical identification of two American diplomats as Bahá'ís, accused of poisoning the water from a miracle-producing well. The article looks at the relations among the Pahlavi regime, the United States, and clerical opposition to the Bahá'ís.
