abstract	South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission met in East London in mid-November to hear testimony from a wide range of Christian churches and from Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, and Baha'i groups and other religious organizations. The aim of the meetings, which were chaired by Anglican archbishop Desmond Tutu, was to investigate the roles that faith groups played in the apartheid era. The range of Christian denominations represented was remarkable, and leaders of the Dutch Reformed Church, which had provided succor to apartheid and was closely linked to Afrikaner national politics and power, attended in order to give an account of their actions. The participating churches committed themselves fully to the pressing task of reconciliation and reconstruction and to the rebirth of moral values and the battle against poverty and economic injustice.
