| abstract | The Baha'i World Centre located in Haifa, Israel, is the spiritual and administrative centre of the Baha'i Faith. The Baha'i World Centre Library is the precursor of the International Baha'i Library to be established at the Centre at a future date. The Library’s collection of Baha'i materials is being acquired through a voluntary depository system and is designed to provide future researchers and historians with unparalleled access to information about the growth and development of a world religion. The largest part of its holdings is known as the pamphlet collection and consists of materials produced by Baha'i communities and individuals in the form of ephemera or grey materials. Other holdings include monographs and theses on or simply mentioning the Faith, a collection of newspaper clippings, and a large collection of community newsletters from around the globe. The geographic location and the current method of staffing the Baha'i World Centre present particular challenges to both the development and long-term management of the collection. This study describes the history, context, collection policies, and challenges facing the Baha'i World Centre Library, and discusses possibilities for the operation of the future International Baha'i Library. |
