abstract Focuses on genocidal conflict as a society's destructive elite's cultural and ideological reaction to the economic and cultural effects of westernization. Genocide may be understood as the reaction of vulnerable elites to perceived economic and cultural threats, by treating minorities in destructive ways. This is illustrated in the violent policies of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Islamic Revolution's treatment of particular minorities in Iran.
