abstract	This is an overview of the development of the Bahá'í Faith in Africa from its beginnings in 1866 to 1986. It deals particularly with the systematic spread of the religion through organized teaching plans launched by Shoghi Effendi and the Universal House of Justice. The paper describes the development of local and national Bahá'í institutions';large-scale conversions; opposition under Islamic, colonial and apartheid regimes; and social and economic projects. The paper includes authoritative Bahá'í texts on Africa and some African servants who played important roles in the Faith's early history. An appendix lists dates and names of the first Bahá'í to move to and to convert in each country.
