| abstract | The author analyzes basic concepts of space to analyze a number of new religious centers in Israel to investigate the concept of "spatial transgression" - the expansion of religious sites based on claims of heritage, and the response of the surrounding social, political, and religious forces. She investigates the Mormon Studies Center in Jerusalem, a mosque in Nazareth, and the Bahá'í gardens in Haifa. The lack of controversy regarding the Bahá'í gardens stems from (1) the low profile of the buildings in terms of scale); (2) Haifa's general intercommunal tolerance; (3) the smallness of the ultraorthodox Jewish community compared to the majority secular Jews; (4) the Bahá'í policy of not seeking converts in Israel; (5) the economic benefits th project brought to th city ofHaifa. |
