abstract In 1935, at age fifty, the Harlem Renaissance writer Alain LeRoy Locke, a philosophy professor at Howard University, contributed a chapter to his friend Horace Kallen’s volumeAmerican Philosophy Today and Tomorrow. In a biographical preamble, Locke described himself as “more of a pagan than a Puritan” and “more of a humanist than a pragmatist.” He then declared himself a “universalist in religion” and a “cultural cosmopolitan” and labeled his philosophical outlook “cultural pluralism and value relativism.” When Locke used the term “universalist in religion,” he was subtly referring to his adherence to the Baha’i faith....
