Abstract Within both the United Nations and the European Union, waste management is regarded as an issue of major importance for maintaining the quality of the Earth's environment, and also as an environmental problem that needs to be dealt with properly if a sustainable development is to be achieved. In this context, literature on the economic management of waste is sparse. Therefore, the dissertation shows how commonly known businesss economic models, tools, methods and organisational theories, as well as the Polluter-Pays Principle, can be applied to waste management generally and specifically to waste fractionation so as to facilitate environmental optimisation of industrial waste fractionation. Conclusions are drawn regarding the use of alterated economic models as a basis for industrial waste assessment aimed at making industry act in a manner truly in accordance with the conception of a sustainable development. Suggestions for further research are made.
