| Abstract | Education in the modern world has been criticized by professional educators, as well as by the general public, for neglecting essential components of human potential, particularly the spiritual component. The purpose of this project was to ascertain from observations and individual perspectives how spiritual development was supported and encouraged at a Baha'i School. In this study, 9 individuals were interviewed, 55 students and 12 parents were surveyed, and three days of observations were conducted to learn about spiritual education at the School. Findings showed that primary focus for spiritual education at the School was to graduate students who are committed to Baha'i ideals, namely the transformation of self, the development of moral leadership, and the development of a life of service to humanity with the ultimate aim of social transformation. In adition, findings showed that spiritual development at the School was largely supported through an integrated service-learning program based in spiritual and moral issues. Opportunities for spiritual and moral development were infused throughout a supportive curriculum structure, an educational methodology that championed active learning, and a strong school culture of respect. Findings also revealed some of the challenges the school's community faced regarding the school culture being conducive of spiritual development and regarding students feeling that their voice was not heard/valued at the school. |
