Abstract	The Bábí Religion was one of the most important movements in 19th-century Iran. The accuracy of most of what has been written about its aims and goals has suffered through failure to take into account the voluminous writings of its founder, Siyyid 'Ali-Muhammad Shirazi, better known as the "Báb" (1819-1850). The present work is designed to serve as an introduction to the Báb's earliest writings, and it attempts to solve some of the initial difficulties faced by those who wish to conduct research on these works. One of the major early works of the Báb, the Treatise on Proving [Muhammad's] Specific Prophethood, is presented as a critical edition, based on one autograph and several later manuscripts. Roughly two-thirds of this text is translated. Where the sometimes virtually untranslatable style of the Báb makes it difficult to achieve a satisfactory rendition, the text has been paraphrased. An extensive commentary on the text is also included in which key terms are explained, sources of Qur'an-verses, Hadith and poetry are identified wherever possible, and additional references from other works of the Báb and the Shaykhi-founders are provided.
