abstract	This thesis traces the development and evolution of Iranian diasporic identity in Vancouver from 1979 to the present, analyzing how waves of migration, each shaped by revolution, war, repression, and protest, have produced divergent experiences of belonging. Drawing on theories of conditional belonging, racial in-betweenness, revolutionary affect, grievability, and exilic media, non-belonging, and politics of pity, this study examines how Iranian-Canadians have responded to racialization in the host community and geopolitical trauma in their homeland. Using a combination of demographic data, media analysis, and literature review, it explores key moments including the 1979 Revolution, the 2009 Green Movement, and the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests. These events sparked a transformation from an exilic and nostalgia-centric identity rooted in pre-revolutionary Iran to a pragmatic-transnational identity engaged with justice and community grief. Focused on North Vancouver and contextualized within global geopolitical events, this thesis argues that diasporic identity is not fixed, but rather in a state of perpetual renegotiation and formed through a dynamic process of memory, resistance, and adaptation to both host and homeland pressures.
