Abstract	Love, longing, separation, hope, war, and peace: This autobiographical narrative encompasses everything that can also be found in the classics of world literature. In 1943, in the midst of the turmoil of the Second World War, Walter Trück arrives in Finland as a soldier. There he meets and falls in love with the Finnish woman Aune. The two spend a happy, carefree summer – then the war separates them, and Walter is taken prisoner by the Russians. When they part with heavy hearts on October 16, 1944, at the train station in Raahe, neither of them yet knows they will never see each other again. For four long years, they write to each other, swearing eternal fidelity and exchanging vows of marriage. But circumstances do not allow them to meet, and eventually Aune marries another. Walter Trück also finds happiness again, falling in love with Elisabeth, who shares his life as his beloved wife for almost 50 years. It is not until 1991 that Walter contacts Aune again. They speak on the phone and write to each other again. As fate would have it, Aune, his first great love, died just one month after Elisabeth. After more than 50 years, Walter returned to Finland and, beside his coffin, bid farewell to his Angel of the North with red roses. "The Prisoner of Raahe" is a touching memoir of a love between two people who never completely gave up their feelings for each other and kept them deep in their hearts across decades and across borders. For Walter Trück, it is also a way of thanking two extraordinary women who accompanied his life and made it worth living.
