Abstract The Baha'i Institute for Higher Education (BIHE) in Iran is a university developed by the Baha'i community to provide access to post-secondary edication for Iranian Baha'i students not allowed to enter the normal university system in the country. Operating since 19987, the BIHE has been repeated attacked and harrassed by government forces. This study explores the factors that have allowed the BIHE to survive and its continuing challenges, by gathering qualitative data from 12 former BIHE students now residing in North America. Extracts from Baha'i sacred texts are used with citations from the interviews to investigate themes that contribute to the endurance of the BIHE in Iran. The study concludes that international support, community sacrifices, and individual resiliency represent factors that have sustained the university.
