Title An Examination of the Use of Taarof in Iranian Americans

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Taarof and immigration status, gender, and acculturation in Iranian Americans. A sample of 98 Iranian Americans adults were recruited from California State University, Northridge Farsi classes and a network of Iranian American friends. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the Iranian Cultural Life Style Inventory (ICLSI), and the Taarof Immersion Inventory (TII). The demographic questionnaire provided information about the heritage of each individual with respect to one's own and one's parents' and grandparents' country of origin, time living in the US, and gender. The Iranian Cultural Life Style Inventory (ICLSI) and the Taarof Immersion Inventory (TII) were evaluated, as the construct validity for Iranian Americans was investigated. Additionally, results indicated a good reliability for both the ICLSI and the TII. It was hypothesized that there was a negative correlation between level of generation, acculturation, and gender with use of Taarof as measured by the Taarof Immersion Inventory. Moreover, it was hypothesized that independent of gender, there is positive correlation between use of Taarof and individuals' interaction with females. These hypotheses were not supported except for the correlation between Iranian-Oriented scores on ICLSI and use of Taarof in Iranian Americans. However, the direction for this hypothesis was not anticipated. Limitations and recommendations for future research are discussed. [Author's abstract]
