Abstract This thesis is about composing a girls' choir arrangement of Baha'i texts, and the process involved. The artistic goal has been to compose simple, singable melodies for texts that are widely used in the Baha'i community, by starting from what can be experienced as the melodiousness and message of the text. Issues discussed are whether awareness of the composition process helps or hinders it, how much the result is colored by the method, and what is most advantageous about having an analytical or an emotional input. It is suggested that consciously controlled, and more automatic or habitual composition methods may have different advantages, that composing with instruments available and unavailable can give different results, and that increased knowledge of methods can give greater variation in the result.
