Abstract This study explored race, faith, and the Baha’i religion in the United States and whether the teachings helped interracial married couples cope with ideas of racism within society. A qualitative research design was implemented to study participants from the Baha’i faith who were interracially or interethnically married. The first three chapters focused on the general and
specific problems presented and examined how interracial or interethnic couples coped with race, marriage, faith and how Baha’is coped with race relations in the United States. The data collected and analyzed in the last two chapters developed themes which resulted in premises that presented race or ethnicity as dominating factors to religion and that the Baha’i faith needs to work harder to develop race unity. The purpose of the study addressed the lived experiences of interracial couples and how psychological implications were handled with race, faith, and society. Moreover, an understanding of whether the teachings of the Baha’i faith were effective in helping couples cope with racism within the American society. Critical race and choice theories used in this research helped understand how they worked in connection with interracial and interethnic Baha’i married couple’s ideas of race in the United States. This study can help contribute to a resurgence within the American society that continues to address race, culture, and religion on a broader scale and within clinical practices. The findings imply that clinicians need to work closely with all world faiths to help clients develop a deeper spiritual connection to healthier spiritual relationships.
