| Abstract | The arts tell our human story. The teachings of each world religion provide a guiding hand in the development over time of a representational body of work that might be called the Sacred Arts. Humankind enjoys an endowment of spectacular architecture, sculpture, paintings, drama, music and dance, ritual and craft across cultures and belief systems that convey a sacred response to the teachings of each religion. The relationship between the arts and religion has been intricately connected in an ancient and perennial dialogue. That bond has become increasingly distanced since the 18th century, and especially within developing postmodern sensibilities and the establishment of the Artworld in the West. The Baha'i Faith offers a unique perspective from which to address questions of the arts and the sacred. Its teachings demonstrate an understanding of the sacred that is largely consonant with other religions and spiritual communities, while providing a language that honors the teachings of other world faiths. It demonstrates a fresh relationship between the arts and religion. Its writings are explicitly supportive of artists and their role in developing community, while respecting the right to individual expression. The purpose of this study is to explore the themes that emerged from conversations with 12 Baha'is who are professional artists, visual artists, musicians, an architect, and a ceramicist, among them. It focuses on the ideas that the artists shared, the metaphors that surfaced in their language and the role of the arts in building community. |
