| Abstract | When Cesar gives a class presentation on his family, William, a classmate, tells him he comes from a “broken family”, since Cesar’s parents are divorced. William also bullies Cesar in other ways, and even makes racist comments about his biracial baby sister. Through the loving support of Cesar’s parents, he begins to understand the role that difficulty plays in growth. During children’s class, the foundational importance of truthfulness is discussed, which also brings up conflicting emotions for Cesar. He longs to be truthful and kind, which can feel impossible when someone is being cruel. This story ends with a Reflection and Discussion section, so readers can reflect on how to balance truth and kindness, and how growth can come from difficulties in our life. |
