| Abstract | "The first author (David N. Magdoff) began a journey to find greater spiritual fulfillment, and his quest eventually led him to the Bahá’í Faith. He was attracted to the Faith’s monotheistic beliefs and ethos of religious tolerance, peace, and unity. He was welcomed into the Faith community and soon immersed himself in the Faith’s writings. This immersion led to a discovery of the Faith’s spiritual leaders disseminating antisemitic ideas as historical facts. Several of these ideas were updated in a contemporary context and again presented as fact. Our case study further suggests that the antisemitic ideas were fostering antisemitic behavior. Discovering religious antisemitism in a faith purporting to end social, racial, gender, and religious injustice gave Magdoff pause—quite literally. He halted the conversion process. His experience not only documents Bahá’í antisemitism but also points to its antecedent Christian and Islamic scriptural influences. A call is made to address antisemitism within the Bahá’í Faith." Prominent critics of the Faith are quoted along with anecdotal cases of antisemitism among Persian Bahá'ís in Europe. |
