| Abstract | Four Midwest Baha'i communities from the 1960s to the present provide case studies into the growth of the Baha'i movement within their respective historical and sociopolitical contexts. These communities—Rochester, Olmsted County, and Winona in Minnesota, and La Crosse in Wisconsin—demonstrate both the historical successes of the expansionary goals of the Nine Year Plan and Five Year Plan, as well as the challenges of sustaining Baha'i communities due to the faith's organizational structure. While secondary research has thus far situated the growth of the Baha’i faith within the sociopolitical turmoil of the 1960s, this thesis also argues the growth patterns of these four Baha’i communities were shaped by the specific expansionary goals of the Nine Year Plan (1964-1973) and the Five Year Plan (1974-1979). However, the rapid growth of the Baha’i faith was not sustained. This research posits that two factors presented, and continue to present, challenges to the continued expansion and organization of the Faith: limitations on the creation of new Local Spiritual Assemblies due to residency restrictions and the mobility of college students, and the avoidance of direct conversion efforts. |
