| Abstract | Anyone who has ever been to Haifa, in Galilee, has necessarily seen or visited the Baha'i gardens! An "urban piece" built over more than a century by successive excavations and earthworks of Mount Carmel, a private green space but dedicated to the public, these gardens are part of a group of Baha'i sites listed as World Heritage Sites. Emblematic of the city, they are also and above all a holy place: the spiritual and administrative heart of an international community of five to eight million faithful who welcome, in Galilee, pilgrims and volunteers from all over the world. Thus, the Baha'i gardens constitute the central element of a sacred topography that extends from Haifa (the burial place of the Bab, the prophet emissary of Baha'ism) to the north of Saint-Jean d'Acre (the burial place of Baha'u'llah, the Baha'i prophet); a topography whose archipelagic development, in deterritorialized islands, this article wishes to highlight. The article thus questions this way of registering in the territory and of making the city – is it paradigmatic? – and demonstrates the power of spatialization and development of the religious and the sacred, based on the international mobilities that it involves. |
