| abstract note | Baha'is are among the youngest of the Middle East's many religious minorities. The Baha'i religion grew out of the heterodox Shi'ite movements in 1840s Iran, but quickly became a link to the Ottoman Empire. Through missionary efforts the religion spread gradually to virtually all regions of the world, and today only a small portion of over five million Baha'is live in the Middle East, including Iran. The Baha'i faith has a special historical regional affiliation and its situation as a minority religion has been characterized by a dynamic that makes it interesting in a minority theoretical discussion. The Baha'is are the only example of the formation of a new religion based on a religious schism within Islam. |
