| abstract note | The Baha'i community, followers of a relatively new religion, have been systematically discriminated against and persecuted in Iran, where the faith originated. Iran's second largest non-Muslim religious minority is the Baha'is. The Islamic Republic of Iran is also a theocratic state since the official basis of its constitution is Islam. This project is an attempt to give equal attention to both political and societal contexts of the atttidue of institutionalized religion in Iran towards the Baha’i community. This study focuses on three main interrelated topics for its investigation. The first examines the historical function of Islam as a controlling element in state-society relations and its significance for present-day Shia-dominated Iran. The second deals with the legal barriers of religious minority status (the Baha’is) after the Islamic Revolution in Iran. The last topic is the social barrier that has emerged and continues to impede the elimination of that discrimination. This study uses two important theoretical frameworks, namely 'Functionalism' and 'Social Conflict theory', to investigate the discriminative role of two important societal components known as 'religion' and 'education'. For further assessments and data collection this paper presents four different interviews from four different members of the Baha’i community. Two of the interviews have been conducted and self-administered by the researcher of this paper, while Euronews and Tavana Institute have conducted the other two interviews. For the theoretical choice this study employs 'fitting' or 'theory-confirming' case study, and for theoretical analysis employs a qualitative, constructivist approach. The result of this study shows that both targeted social components (religion and education), serve as divisive forces in Iranian society. One barrier to the elimination of discrimination is the concept of Islamophobia. |
