abstract note	This article addresses architects, planners, and developers but should also interest other professionals involved in the creation of the built environment. The built environment is principally made up of buildings and groupings of buildings ; therefore the article focuses on architecture and urban design. The author argues that there is a dimension missing from the built environment, as shown from architects' statements. Architecture is unable to satisfy people's emotional and aesthetic needs ; the profession itself, which admits that modern architecture has created bleak, insensitive environments, disagrees about how to rectify the situation. Quotations from proponents of various styles highlight the arguments over architecture and urban design. A growing concern about urban architecture is the need for a spiritual dimension. The author defines the notion of "spiritual." Two important principles - unity in diversity, and consultation - are discussed.
