abstract note	This article gathers a large amount of information on the ancestry and immediate family of Tahirih available in Arabic and Persian, primarily in biographical dictionaries of Shi'i scholars and family sources. Tahirih, regarded by Bábís as the return of Fatimih, was in fact descended from Fatimih on her mother's side. The paper particularly reviews what the sources say about Tahirih's life before she became a Bábí.
