Technical Notes

Browser Compatibility
Pages on this site are checked on recent versions of Netscape, Mozilla, Phoenix/Firebird, Internet Explorer , and Opera, though screen layout on different browsers may differ slightly from that intended.  Most information frames, without the sidebar, are restricted to a width of 600 pixels so that they can be viewed on the VGA displays still used by about 5% of visitors.

Frames
This site uses frames to display a navigation sidebar.  However, the user has the option, on entering a framed area, to select a "no-frames" display (click on "Remove Sidebar" in hte sidebar) without losing the essential links that are incorporated into all pages.

Fonts
For best results, Netscape should be set to default to Times New Roman 11pt, and Internet Explorer to Times New Roman Medium (fonts that seem right for most sites). However, most font attributes on this site are generated using style sheets, in accordance with the specification laid down in REC-CSS1-19990111. Recent versions of most browsers implement this standard pretty well; older versions, on the other hand, may ignore some commands (e.g. superscript), leading to a slight raggedness in display.

For those with visual impairment, it is possible to opt for large fonts to be used instead of the standard sizes. (but not with Opera versions before 7).
