Yes, though I think I'd put it such that His words always meant the Universal House of Justice only, but at that time He stated it in such a way that the believers might interpret it as a reference to the Local House of Justice. Shoghi Effendi and the Universal House of Justice are the only definitive sources after Baha'u'llah and 'Abdu'l-Baha on matters pertaining to the Faith, so yes, the passage is indeed only about the Universal House of Justice. :) However, the document at http://bahai-library....

Re: Which NSA members elected the first House of Justice in

A good number of the Hands of the Cause were still members of National Spiritual Assemblies at the time of the Guardian's death. For example, see "UNANIMOUS PROCLAMATION OF THE 27 HANDS OF THE CAUSE OF GOD" at http://bahai-library.com/uhj_ministry_custodians&chapter=1#28 where many of ...

Great find! Here's the link: http://bahai-library.com/uhj_ministry_c ... pter=7#406 . It is possible though that since this was before the election that there could have been a cancellation or change in plans for someone or other...

Re: Which NSA members elected the first House of Justice in

Thanks, Don. The listing of NSAs as of 1963 is at http://bahai-library.com/handscause_sta ... 1953-63#23 (and is the same list as that you sent--this is public record rather than something sensitive, so I see no issue making mention of it). But again, there are no individual names there.

Re: Which NSA members elected the first House of Justice in

The only attempt I've seen to do this has been at the individual pages linked from http://bahaikipedia.org/Portal:Contents#National_Spiritual_Assemblies . But, taking the U.S. page, as an example, not all of the data seems to be found in the explicit references, so it may be hard to find confirming ...

I'd guess that there would probably be ways around the searching problem unless the data were stored as images (and even then it could be OCRd back)...

Re: Baha'i teachings re withholding sex in marriage

Hello njoy, Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Certainly the moral and often most constructive thing to do is to focus on what one can do. But there can also be a need for justice. While you are right that it should of course not be enforced, justice can also come from a recognized authority (in t...

Re: Affirmative action

There is also this quote which, while allowing for consideration of "diversity" (as well as age distribution and gender), qualifies it by saying it should be "among the pool of those whom the elector believes to be qualified to serve": "From among the pool of those whom the ...

Affirmative action

I'll venture to say that the following quote is fairly well known to Baha'is: "… If any discrimination is at all to be tolerated, it should be a discrimination not against, but rather in favour of the minority, be it racial or otherwise. Unlike the nations and peoples of the earth, be they of t...

Re: Can I request answers from Assemblies in written form?

Can I request answers from Assemblies in written or electronic form, as Universal House of Justice practising? As Bruce says, why not? There are no restrictions listed in such Writings as "Any person can refer a matter to the Assembly for consultation whether the other party wishes to or not.&...

Re: Procedure of Universal House of Justice decision-making

I am not aware of any quotations on the exact procedures. I do recall hearing, however, that the Universal House of Justice is to be cc'd by the National Spiritual Assembly whenever a Local Spiritual Assembly writes to them (with suggestions?); if this is the case, perhaps it is due to the fact that...

Re: Procedure of Universal House of Justice decision-making

Thanks for adding the source, Don--forgot that. As far as your suggestion, Prometheus, for making an invitation to NSAs to view the site "by individuals before sending any requests to the Universal House of Justice", there is at least a quotation which does indeed advise our making use of ...
