False Prophets

Postby choogue » Wed Nov 01, 2006 3:31 am

Hi All,

Does anyone know if Bahaullah and the Bab foretold of any false prophets?

If so, what would make someone believe in them or prove them as false?

If you can direct me to a piece of writing from both, that would be great otherwise an explantion would be fine. Thanks.

Regards
Abbas

First thing that comes to mind is that anyone claiming to be a Prophet before the expiration of 1,000 years is false. (For more on this issue and the exact dates, see these threads: http://bahai-library.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=306 , http://bahai-library.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=1029 , and http://bahai-library.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=1087 .)

That's only a partial answer, of course, and I'm sure others will dig up a dozen useful quotes. :-)

Unless you find an elixir of life, you won't have to worry about false prophets. :)

From Shoghi Effendi in 'The Promised Day is Come', p 113:

This vital force is dying out, this mighty agency has been scorned, this radiant light obscured, this impregnable stronghold abandoned, this beauteous robe discarded. God Himself has indeed been dethroned from the hearts of men, and an idolatrous world passionately and clamorously hails and worships the false gods which its own idle fancies have fatuously created, and its misguided hands so impiously exalted. The chief idols in the desecrated temple of mankind are none other than the triple gods of Nationalism, Racialism and Communism, at whose altars governments and peoples, whether democratic or totalitarian, at peace or at war, of the East or of the West, Christian or Islamic, are, in various forms and in different degrees, now worshiping. Their high priests are the politicians and the worldly-wise, the so-called sages of the age; their sacrifice, the flesh and blood of the slaughtered multitudes; their incantations outworn shibboleths and insidious and irreverent formulas; their incense, the smoke of anguish that ascends from the lacerated hearts of the bereaved, the maimed, and the homeless.

The theories and policies, so unsound, so pernicious, which deify the state and exalt the nation above mankind, which seek to subordinate the sister races of the world to one single race, which discriminate between the black and the white, and which tolerate the dominance of one privileged class over all others—these are the dark, the false, and crooked doctrines for which any man or people who believes in them, or acts upon them, must, sooner or later, incur the wrath and chastisement of God.

Here's a whole bunch more of 'false prophets' <<(my designation)>> listed by Shoghi Effendi in 'The World Order of Baha'u'llah' p.187:

"The recrudescence of religious intolerance, of racial animosity, and of patriotic arrogance; the increasing evidences of selfishness, of suspicion, of fear and of fraud; the spread of terrorism, of lawlessness, of drunkenness and of crime; the unquenchable thirst for, and the feverish pursuit after, earthly vanities, riches and pleasures; the weakening of family solidarity; the laxity in parental control; the lapse into luxurious indulgence; the irresponsible attitude towards marriage and the consequent rising tide of divorce; the degeneracy of art and music, the infection of literature, and the corruption of the press; the extension of the influence and activities of those “prophets of decadence” who advocate companionate marriage, who preach the philosophy of nudism, who call modesty an intellectual fiction, who refuse to regard the procreation of children as the sacred and primary purpose of marriage, who denounce religion as an opiate of the people, who would, if given free rein, lead back the human race to barbarism, chaos, and ultimate extinction—these appear as the outstanding characteristics of a decadent society, a society that must either be reborn or perish."

Hey Richard

The Guardian can really expound on a point, can't he?

The Bible provides a wonderful method for distinguishing between false prophets and truly inspired Ones.

"Beware of false prophets.... Ye shall know them by their fruits..... Every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.... Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." (Matthew 7: 15-20)

It doesn't get better than this. :)

"who would, if given free rein, lead back the human race to barbarism, chaos, and ultimate extinction"...these people today market their barbarism—which it really is as the Guardian puts it—by using words that make layment believe what the barbarians are marketing is actually the decent and "advanced" approach in this day and age. "Back then" we were puritanical and wayward for having values, morals, structure, etc...these days they don't want us "imposing" our morals on them () .
