The Number 23

Postby Keyvan » Sat Mar 24, 2007 3:17 am

I just saw the movie "The Number 23." not a great film, but the subject of "23" as a mathematical phenomenon, that has correlated to countless historical events and other notables, is interesting.

some examples:

1. Each parent contributes 23 chromosomes to the DNA of a child.
2. It takes 23 seconds for blood to circulate throughout the entire body.
3. In humans, the 23rd chromosome determines gender.
4. There are 23 letters in the Latin alphabet.
5. Julius Caesar was stabbed 23 times when he was assassinated.
6. WTC attack was September 11th, 2001. 9+11+2+0+0+1=23
7. The Knights Templar had 23 Grand Masters.
8. William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564.
9. William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616.
10. The ancient Egyptian and Sumerian calendars begin on July 23.
11. The Titanic sank the morning of April 15th, 1912 (4 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 2 = 23)
12. The Mayans believed the world will end on December 23, 2012 (20 + 1 + 2 = 23)

Of course I tried it out for myself.

the first number of i tested out was the Day of Declaration / Birth of Abdu'l Baha

May 23rd 1844

19th Century
1+9=10

44th Year
4+4=8

5th Month
5=5

10+8+5=23!!!!!!!!!!

and of course the 23rd day of that month!!! 23 and 23!!

Actually, the mayans don't believe the world will end in 2012, Unless they also believed it ended in 1618 and 1224. Even if they did it's the 21st not 23rd.

Also, there is no evidence that it takes 23 seconds for blood to move through the body. It varies greatly, depending on the person's size (volume of blood) and the strength of the heart (athletes tend to pump a higher volume of blood than couch potatoes).
The average person has 5 liters of blood in their body, and the average heart pumps 1 liter per minute. So if you are at rest, the blood that leaves the heart takes about a minute to travel around and back to the heart again.
Hold on... 5 (liters) + 1 (minute) = 6.... oh no! 6 = 2x3.... there is that 23 again! ha ha :D

While mathematics are the building blocks of the universe, you can find interesting relationships and patterns in ALL numbers if you look hard enough into them.

While I don't know whether to classify numerology as superstition yet, the idea that numbers all have separate powers and significances is interesting.

"The Master has said that there is a certain amount of truth in numerology, physiognomy etc. but it is too much exaggerated by those who advocate them."

(From a letter dated October 27, 1926 written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer: Spiritualism, Psychic Phenomena and Related Subjects, in Lights of Guidance, no. 1757)

"...it is absolutely essential that the teachings should not be confused with the obscure ideas related to numerology and astrology and the like. Individuals interested in them are free to believe in and credit such ideas and to make any inferences and deductions they desire from them, but under no circumstances are they expected to identify them with the principles and teachings of the Cause. We must at this stage preserve the purity and sanctity of the Bahá'í teachings. I will pray that you may be guided in your efforts, and may succeed in safeguarding and promoting the interests of our beloved Faith."

(From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer, December 26, 1928: Ibid.)

"There is nothing in the teachings which leads us to believe numerology or astrology are needed by the believers to guide them in any way."

(From a letter dated June 25, 1950 written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer: Spiritualism, Psychic Phenomena and Related Subjects)

THE 23 ENIGMA
20+8+5 + 23 + 5+14+9+7+13+1= 105

105 x 23 = 2415

2+4+1+5 = 12

the23enigma
12345678901

12 + 11 = 23

See what you can find when you look for it

Although its not something to focus on as mentioned, numerology is definately interesting and i don't find it superstitious because numbers are significant (as long as you don't treat them with superstition). 2+3 = 5 :) Yep I can do maths too
