Bahá'í community promotes concepts of family unity
They will present him with a book on the subject of the family, entitled, “Marriage Beyond Black and White,” described “as an interracial family portrait” by David and Barbara Douglas.
The local Bahá’í community is hosting events for the tenth anniversary of the UN Year of the Family and the book was chosen specially to mark the occasion.
The promotion of the concepts of family unity and “unity in diversity” in racial matters are considered a spiritual and social responsibility by the Bahá’ís worldwide.
Chair of the Waterford Bahá’í assembly, Mr. Matthew Kennedy, said: “Last year we had the privilege of welcoming the then Mayor to the International Bahá’í Summer School held at Newtown School and this year we are delighted to be making this presentation to Councillor Ryan.”
The first event to be held to honour the UN anniversary will be a talk entitled, “All God’s Children — A Cherished Vision,” by Tralee psychotherapist, Ms. Caroline Smith, on the topic of society’s responsibility for the care of children.
It will be held in the Large Room in the City Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at 8 p.m. and it is open to all free of charge.
On the following day, Wednesday 18th, an open day entitled “Celebrating the UN Year of the Family” will be incorporated as a part of the Bahá’í Summer School at Newtown School.
All activities of the school on the 18th will focus on the theme of “the family”.
Talks by visiting speakers on topics related to the family and parenting will be given and children’s and art activities will be open to all those interested in coming along.
The Bahá’í community of Waterford has been organising and involved in local activities here since the early seventies and has had an elected administrative council since 1974.
