Abstract:
Letter indicating that a quote about shaving of the beard is a mere pilgrim's note.
Notes:
The statement in question is "For instance, we do not know what is the use of this nail. It grows and it is cut again. We see that we have the nail; but we do not know that there are a thousand wisdoms within the creation of this nail. For instance, men ask: Why should we have the beard; why should we have the moustache? They shave. But in reality there is a great wisdom in this. It is healthful. The skin receives the oxygen through the beard." See bahai.works/Star_of_the_West/Volume_3/Issue_11.

Dear Bahá’í Friend,

The Universal House of Justice has received your email letter of 30 January 2022, forwarded by..., in which you ask about the authenticity of a statement attributed to ‘Abdu’l-Bahá about the shaving of the beard that is published in Star of the West, volume 3, number 11, page 5. Your query was referred to the Research Department, and it has reported that this statement is an extract from personal impressions of an informal conversation of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. As you are no doubt aware, Shoghi Effendi has made clear that the notes of pilgrims, whoever they may be, are merely personal impressions of the individual who wrote them, and are not regarded as authoritative.

    With loving Bahá’í greetings,
    Department of the Secretariat
