| BIB02110 | Orient Express | Orient Express | Dos Passos, John | 1927 | 1927 | Harper & Brothers | New York ; London | 10. | Book | Colorful chronicle of author's travels through the Middle East in 1921. | Bahá'í Faith: pp. 76, 90-92. The author refers to his traveling companion, Sayyid: "...he thought in many ways as the Baha'is thought, and they were good people, honest and tolerant and anxious for progress and education; he only wished there were more of them in Persia." Dos Passos met three American Baha'i women in Tihran in the month of Muharram (Sept. 4 -Oct. 3), 1921, just a few months before 'Abdu'l-Baha's passing: "The three American women were Baha'i Missionaries, one from New York, one from Chicago and the youngest one perhaps from some small town in the Dakotas. They all had the same eyes, spread, unblinking, with dilated pupils. We sat in a long dark room furnished in European Persian style, looking at each other constrainedly. The eldest women spoke of the persecutions of the followers of Baha'ullah in Persia.... She was old with tired grey hair puffed over her forehead and grey unfirm lips and a face full of small tired wrinkles. The Presbyterian missionaries who lived in the big mission at the other end of town would not speak to them because they were not Christians. They do not know that the service of our lord El Baha'ullah includes the service of Christ who was also a great prophet and the emanation of God. Another of the women was a doctor. Her face was firm and thin and she was neatly dressed. She spoke of the sufferings of the women, of their flabby ignorance, their wilted lives in the candied gloom of the anderun, the sickness among them and the difficulty with which they had children. The youngest one had come recently to Teheran. Her talk was full of miracles. She had come up from the coast in winter. They had told her it was death to attempt such a thing. Death has no power on the servant of everlasting light. She had crossed alone a great snowy pass that even the Kourds didn't dare pass in winter; when she came to a ford the swollen river would shrink within its banks; bandits had killed all the other travellers on the road but her; at every step she had felt the hand of God bearing her up, keeping her mule from stumbling, turning away the designs of wicked men. It was dark when I left them..." The three women were most likely: (1) Dr. Sarah A. Clock, the eldest of the three, who arrived in the winter of 1911 and died Jan. 24, 1922 in Tihran; (2) Dr. Susan I. Moody from Chicago who arrived in Tihran Nov. 26, 1909 and died in Iran Oct. 23, 1934 (she founded the Tarbiyat School for Girls in Tihran); and (3) Elizabeth H. Stewart, a nurse from Philadelphia who arrived with Lillian Kappes in Dec. 1911 (Kappes died Dec. 1, 1920 in Tihran, about nine months before Dos Passos arrived), returned to Philadelphia in Jan. 1925 and died in 1926. Stewart, however, did not arrive "recently" as the author suggests, and she was not from the Dakotas. Genevieve L. Coy arrived in 1922 to replace Kappes, so it could not have been she. |

| BIB02120 | The Rustle of His Robe : A Vision of the Dawn of the New Day | The Rustle of His Robe : A Vision of the Dawn of the New Day | 1927 | 1927 | Sun Publishing Co. | Akron, Ohio | 10. ; 7.1361 | Book | Replaces the record originally designated as 7.1361, now designated as a non-Bahá'í work with reference to the Faith (section 10.) Bahá'í Faith: p. [59]: Quote from "ABDUL-BAHA ABBAS [sic]:" "Glad tidings to you who are drawn by the fragrance of God!"; p. [4]: An unattributed quotation from Bahá'u'lláh's Tablet to the Shah appears before the preface. Various Hidden Words are printed before almost every chapter: pp. [9,] [13], [17], [21], [25], [29], [33], [37], [43], [47], [51], [55], [59], [69], [73], [77], but never is Bahá'u'lláh indicated as the Author of the quotations. The pages are not numbered. The copyright date of 1901 appears on the verso to the title page, and a new preface (2 pages as opposed to a 16 page preface in Kern's work) ends with "New York, 1901." There is reason to suspect, however, that someone other than Margaret Kern wrote the revisions. On p. [4] "The Author" states: "The first edition of The Rustle of His Robe was published in 1901. In this edition a few quotations have been added, heading some of the chapters, and some new interpretations of the Symbols seen, and which now are much more clearly understood." On p. [6]: "Note -- When the first edition of this little book was issued, the author thought the Message it contained was for one particular organization. But time and events have convinced the writer that this is not so, but that the Message has a universal significance. As these are the days of Unity it is hoped that this later edition will aid to strengthen the bonds of Universal Brotherhood irrespective of beliefs and religions. For indeed it is true, 'That Brotherhood is a fact in Nature and not a beautiful theory.' [signed] The Author" This edition was published by Sun Publishing Company, a small publishing house in Akron, Ohio run by a certain Joseph Benner who was the sole proprietor and an avid follower of Brother XII from March 1927 to late 1928 (see Brother XII : The Strange Odyssey of a 20th-Century Prophet, by John Oliphant). Benner was well-known at the time to have authored the originally anonymous work, The Impersonal Life, written in a similar tone to Bahá'u'lláh's Hidden Words with the explanation that the "I" and "We" of the commanding voice was the "Inner Voice" of humanity (in the 1960’s, Elvis Presley discovered The Impersonal Life and claimed that the book turned his life around). Benner published a catalog in Sept. 1927 (see Catalogue of Publications and Importations by Sun Publishing) in which he refers to The Rustle of His Robe as follows: "We have the privilege of offering in this beautiful allegory a very valuable contribution to AQUARIAN literature. It is addressed to a higher type than the ordinary three-dimensional mind, and requires effort to grasp the hidden treasures with which it is filled. Like LIGHT ON THE PATH [sic], it is intended for Disciples on the straight and narrow road of self-mastery, which leads to the sacred temple of 'Brotherhood'; but in order to enable students more easily to understand the instructions given, in the Introduction we have provided aid by suggesting interpretations of some of the symbolic terms used. These will help all earnest seekers to enter into the consciousness where the inner meaning will become clear. This is a book you will read and re-read many times, each time new beauties and higher truths unfolding themselves, causing you to value it as one of your dearest possessions." Joseph Benner identifies himself as having "provided aid by suggesting interpretations…" so there is no doubt that he at least participated in the reinterpretation of the original book by Kern. This revised edition therefore must have been published between March 1927 (when he first met Brother XII) and September 1927 (when his catalog was published). Quotations from The Three Truths : A Simple Statement of the Fundamental Philosophy of Life by Brother XII (first published in 1927 by Sun Publishing) appear alongside the Hidden Words at the start of several chapters. This Rustle of His Robe has 19 chapters, although chapter XII was entirely removed; the text skips from Ch. XI to XIII in both the hardback and paperback. It's unlikely that this was done inadvertently, and was likely removed to honor Brother XII. Did Margaret Kern contribute to the revision of her original work? Was she even aware that her work was revised and republished? Could she have fallen under the spell of the charismatic Brother XII? Further research must tell the tale.
