| BIB00809 | In the Desert | In the Desert | Phillipps, L. March | 1905 | 1905 | Edward Arnold | London | 10. | Book | "Babis:" pp. 271-2 and 287 in appendix. p. 271: 'The second impulse, the impulse on the liberal side, springs, as it is also needless to say, from Persia. The pretension of Seyed Mohammed Ali to be the Bab, or Gate, or "intermediary," was in effect an attempt to supply the thing needed in Mohammedanism, both socially and religiously. It was an attempt to humanise and vitalise the faith and to endow it with an authoritative, recognised presence and voice, such as it must possess if it is to form a rallying point for social organisation. Consequently when the Bab declared himself, social and religious reformers alike saw in him their opportunity, and he was backed up not only by the spiritually-minded, by mystics, enthusiasts, and visionaries, but also by men of affairs, men of intellect, sagacity, and learning. A liberalism of ideas became the characteristic of the new sect. It was distinguished by its cheerfulness, hospitality, and charity. In nothing was its enlightenment more shown than in its treatment of women. The old Eastern degradations and disabilities were abolished. Polygamy, concubinage, the use of the veil, were disallowed or discouraged. The equality of the sexes was recognised. And all this reform, all this liberalism, all this spirit of progress gathers round the person of an individual who aspires to play much the same part towards Mohammedanism that Christ played towards Judaism....' The main body of text ends (p. 274) with an informed analysis of orthodox Islam as both a civilizing force and an obstacle to progress, and with an evaluation of its future prospects. |

| BIB00843 | A Short History of Freethought : Ancient and Modern | A Short History of Freethought : Ancient and Modern | Robertson, John M. | 1906 | 1906 | Watts & Co. | London | 10. | Book | Bahá'í Faith: I:viii, 281-2. "The Bâb,... who showed a strong tendency to intolerance, quickly created an aggressive movement.... "...Béha, who gave himself out as the true Prophet, of whom the Bâb was merely the precursor, developed a notably cosmopolitan and equalitarian doctrine, including a vague belief in immortality, without heaven, hell, or purgatory.... The Béhaïtes number nearly three millions out of the seven millions of the Persian population, and some two millions in adjacent countries. The son of Béha, Abbas Effendi, who bears the title of 'The Great Branch,' now rules the cult, which promises to be the future religion of Persia. One of the most notable phenomena of the earlier movement was the entrance of a young woman, daughter of a leading ulema, who for the first time in Moslem history threw off the regulation veil and preached the equality of the sexes. She was one of those first executed. Persecution, however, has long ceased, and as a result of her lead the position of woman in the cult is exceptionally good. thus the last century has witnessed within the sphere of Islam, so commonly supposed to be impervious to change, one of the most rapid and radical religious changes recorded in history. There is therefore no ground for holding that in other Moslem countries progress is at an end." The 3rd edition of 1915 contains the same material on the Faith (pp. 273-274). |
